WHAT IS IELTS? FOR WHOM IS IT USEFUL?

IELTS is an abbreviation for International English Language Testing System. It is an international standardized test of English language proficiency for non-native English language speakers.

This test is taken by people who want to study or work where English is used as a language of communication. It uses a nine-band scale to clearly identify levels of proficiency, from non-user (band score 1) through to expert (band score 9).

There are two types of IELTS test – IELTS Academic and IELTS General

IELTS TEST FORMAT

Test Duration: 2 Hours 45 Minutes Sections:

  •  Listening for 30 Minutes (4 sections, 40 questions)
  •  Reading 60 Minutes (3 sections, 40 questions)
  •  Writing 60 Minutes (2 Essays)
  •  Speaking 12 – 14 Minutes (Interview, Speak on a topic, Discussion)

IELTS Academic is for people applying for higher education or professional registration, and General Training for that migrating to Australia, Canada and the UK, or applying for secondary education, training programs and work experience in an English-speaking environment. Both versions provide a valid and accurate assessment of the four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.

IELTS treats all test takers with the utmost fairness and respect by actively avoiding cultural bias and accepting all standard varieties of native-speaker English, including North American, British, Australian and New Zealand English.

IELTS test centers are available at more than 1,600 locations worldwide, including more than 50 locations in the USA.

IELTS can be taken on Paper or Computer

IELTS TEST FORMAT

There are two types of IELTS: Academic and General Training. Listening and Speaking are the same for both tests, but the subject matter of the Reading and Writing sections differs depending on which test you take.

The Listening, Reading and Writing sections of all IELTS tests are completed on the same day, with no breaks in between them.

The Speaking section, however, can be completed up to a week before or after the other tests. Your test center will advise.

The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes.

IELTS is recognized and trusted by individuals and organizations worldwide for its fairness, reliability and high-quality standards

If you would like assistance with test preparation, IELTS centers and language schools around the world offer IELTS preparation courses. You don’t have to attend a preparation course, but many test takers find that doing so helps them improve their performance.
